As a top university in China and a key national “Double First-Class" institution, Wuhan University has entered the stage of smart campus construction centered on intelligent interconnection and integrated development. With a large scale, multi-campus layout and a large number of teachers and students, the university needs to support various information applications, which imposes extremely high requirements on the stability, efficiency and scalability of the campus network, data center, security system and computing resources.
With the in-depth advancement of the “Double First-Class" initiative and the wide application of new technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence, the university’s legacy information infrastructure has gradually revealed shortcomings: insufficient network coverage, poor wireless roaming experience, scattered data center resources, inadequate computing power support, imperfect security system, messy equipment brands and high operation and maintenance costs.
To solve the above problems, Wuhan University launched the Smart Campus Infrastructure Upgrade Project. Relying on its rich practical experience in the education industry, H3C undertook the construction of the campus network, data center, network security and computing resources.
Centered on Wuhan University’s construction goal of “Expanding One Network, Strengthening One Cloud", H3C adopted the philosophy of “Unified Planning, Phased Implementation, Full Coverage and Elastic Expansion" to provide an end-to-end integrated solution and complete the comprehensive upgrade of infrastructure. The details are as follows:
H3C high-performance switches are deployed to build a three-tier “core-aggregation-access" architecture.
It achieves full network coverage and high-speed transmission. Meanwhile, SR66/SR88 Series border routers and BRAS devices are deployed to ensure smooth network access and optimized management.
H3C Wi-Fi 5/6 integrated wireless network is built, covering all scenarios such as teaching areas and dormitories, supporting 28,000 APs across the network.
It guarantees seamless wireless roaming and access security.
H3C UIS Series hyper-converged appliances (UIS 3060 G7, UIS 4300 G6, etc.) are deployed to replace the original virtualization platform and build an elastic IaaS resource pool.
H3C UniServer R3950 G7/R4950 G7 rack servers are also deployed to provide computing support, and unified management of the resource pool is realized through the H3C UIS Cloud platform.
A comprehensive security protection system is built, including H3C:
It fully guarantees network and data security.
Based on H3C S10500X-G switches and OLT/ONU devices, an F5G all-optical campus network is deployed.
A unified operation and maintenance (O&M) platform is established to integrate network-wide equipment resources and achieve efficient and intensive management.
This solution effectively solves the pain points of the university’s original infrastructure and provides solid support for the high-quality development of Wuhan University. The core values are as follows:
The wired + wireless networks achieve full coverage, supporting 28,000 APs and various business applications. The elastic computing foundation carries more than 130 information systems, providing sufficient computing power for scientific research and greatly improving work efficiency.
H3C UIS Cloud and the unified O&M platform realize unified management of network-wide resources and simplify O&M processes. The integrated design of hyper-converged appliances and elastic resource scheduling effectively reduce hardware investment and O&M costs.
The comprehensive security system effectively defends against network attacks, unauthorized access and data leakage risks, ensuring the continuous and stable operation of teaching and research services.
The scalable architecture not only meets current construction goals, but also reserves space for future technology evolution, supporting the university’s “Double First-Class" development and building a top-level smart campus benchmark in China.
